Who We Are

The Family Healthcare Playbook is both a book and an organization dedicated to educating, supporting, and celebrating non-professional caregivers. Our mission is to provide simple, straightforward advice and assistance for non-professional caregivers.

Your Caregiving Journey

  • Accept

First, you or a loved one will experience a medical event at some point.  It’s not a question of if but when. Acknowledge, accept and surrender to that fact, and you’ve got the right mindset.

  • Prepare

Second, the more you and your family prepare ahead of time (before a medical event or crisis arises), the better the outcome. Having the tough conversations and making difficult decisions now (while everyone is healthy) is infinitely easier than working through them in a crisis.

Third, creating your own Family Healthcare Playbook won’t eliminate any future medical issues—again, you’ll still have them—but it will ensure you and your loved ones are better prepared to manage the journey ahead.

  • Connect

Fourth, you are not alone! More than 105 million Americans currently serve as family caregivers to someone who is aging, ill, or disabled. We are all managing this together and can help each other along the way. Once you learn some of the lessons and practices in this book, please pay it forward and share them with others.

  • Celebrate

Fifth, caregiving can be challenging. Yes. Full stop. AND it is also one of the most sacred, kind, selfless and loving gifts you can share with a loved one or a friend. Caregiving – the good and the bad of it – must be celebrated.

“To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors.

— Tia Walker

About the Founder

The Family Healthcare Playbook: An Action Plan for the Accidental Caregiver is written by award-winning technology communications executive and renowned public speaker Karesha McGee. With more than 25 years of experience in the high-tech industry, she has advised C-level and senior executives at large multinationals, high-growth start-ups, and venture capital firms, including Slack (NYSE: WORK; now Salesforce: NYSE: CRM); Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO); Oracle (NYSE: ORCL); Uber (NYSE: UBER); Hello Tractor; and VestedWorld.

Throughout her career, she has also served as the primary caregiver for her mother, who has experienced significant health challenges over the years, including breast cancer, two brain aneurysms resulting in multiple brain surgeries, and other medical interventions. The dichotomy of serving as a senior tech executive while simultaneously serving as a caregiver has required Ms. McGee to develop a unique set of tools—across software and medicine—to manage and maintain her life and career while navigating the labyrinthine healthcare system.

The Family Healthcare Playbook: An Action Plan for the Accidental Caregiver is the culmination of those learnings, drawing on her first-hand experience navigating the joys and challenges of caregiving. This book and its supporting resources endeavor to help support and provide resources for Accidental Caregivers around the world.
